This is Grandma H’s favorite spot in Wolcott. She told me “It’s the best view in the world.”
“What about Empire State Building–looking out on all of New York?”
She shakes her head. “Best view in the world.”
*****
Grandma H is shopping at Super Stop and Shop. She looks down aisle 4 and sees a man flat on his back. She announces very loudly to everyone around her, “Man down on aisle 4,” and continues her shopping.

For Mother’s Day, we took Mom’s mom and Dad’s mom to brunch with us.
Grandma H confides to Dad’s mom, Grandma E, that Dad is “Just not funny. He thinks he is but he isn’t.”
Grandma E smiles and says, “Oh he makes me laugh all the time.”
Grandma H mumbles, “You’re just being nice.”
*****
At the end of the meal, we asked the waiter to wrap up our leftovers. As he picks up her plate, Grandma H says, “Write my name on the container. Harriet*.”
When he returns with the container in a bag, she checks and sees he hasn’t written her name on it. He picks up Grandma E’s plate to wrap the leftovers and Grandma H says, “Ellen*.”
He takes the plate and returns with the doggie bag. No name.
Grandma H refuses to accept defeat. As he picks up my plate she says, “Kourtney.”
None of our doggie bags had names on them. But she kept on trying. I see where I get my stubbornness from.

Love your Grandma H stories!
Thanks! A post about her was long overdue. 😉
Grandma H sure is a character! Love it.
Thanks Gwen. She’s definitely not your typical grandma. 😉
That certainly gave me my morning chuckle!
She has that affect. 🙂 Glad she brightened your morning.
I had to stop by for a Grandma H post! ‘Man down in aisle 4.’—Too funny. Love how she just carries on with her business, though I do wonder what the guy was doing on the ground… 🙂
Aw thanks! It’s priceless that she announces it (doing her part to get him help) and then continues on her way). Me too.
That’s a grandma who’s a kindred spirit! The photo is beautiful.
LOL. She’s definitely an unique lady. 🙂 Thanks. “Best view in the world.” 😉
Very cute.
Thanks! 🙂 She’s quite a pip.
‘Man down in aisle 4’ – great memory!
Perfect Grandma H moment. She does her part to help but then continues on her way. 🙂
What a riot. I laughed out loud about “man down”. I really would love to be in her head sometimes. 😉
LOL. I can’t imagine what it’s like in there. I get thinking it. But announcing it? I guess she knew she was too old to help him up so she figured she’d pass the info on to someone who could. 🙂
I’ve missed Grandma H! So glad to see her back here for the holiday weekend. 🙂
Aw thanks JM! She and I haven’t gotten to spend as much time together with the book launch. But Mother’s Day we caught up. 🙂 Happy to share her with you again!
I know I’m not alone, and will be laughing about “Man down in aisle 4.” for quite some time.
Grandma H, and her persistence with personalised doggie bags makes me think of Dad and his endless quest for oysters kilpatrick… at every restaurant… even if they don’t appear on the menu, he find a nice waitress, who he thinks might be sympathetic, to ask… he is never daunted… unlike the rest of us.
Thank you so much – I love Grandma H. 🙂
LOL. Me too. 😉 They would get on well I think. I love how older people are so fearless about getting what they want. 🙂 Aw glad you enjoyed it. It’s long overdue!
Love this story–and she’s right that view is pretty spectacular!
Thanks Coleen! It’s really lovely. But my “best view in the world” would be a tie between the view of Florence from Piazza Michelangelo or the view from Dante’s View in Death Valley, CA.;)
This is sooo funny! No wonder everyone loves Grandma H; she is wonderful! “Man down on aisle 4” – hahaha. Her favorite view is lovely.
Thanks! She cracks the family up on a regular basis. 🙂 The stuff she says is priceless.
