What Kind of Blueberry Picker Are You?

While Ma and I were blueberry picking, we realized there are 3 types of pickers.

The Random Chatters

They think of the field as a coffeehouse and approach everyone wanting to chat. Sometimes they impart berry knowledge; sometimes they are just looking for small talk. They meander to a few locations.

The Family Bonders

They bring small children and really are there to make a memory, not to get berries. They stop at the first bush they see.

The Pickers

They come to fill baskets. They don’t want to talk. They want to get as many berries as they can as quickly as they can. They go away from everyone and seek the unpicked bushes in the farthest areas of the field.

Guess where Ma and I fall?

Category 3: The Pickers.

In one hour, we picked 10 baskets/13 pounds of blueberries.

A Family Bonder saw our haul and remarked, “Wow, look at all those berries. That’s amazing.”

Now Ma and I don’t stay together in the same row because that’s not efficient, and we want to maximize berry finds. Here’s a pic of Ma and me picking berries. Her approach is to work on 6 baskets at a time so that it’s not so hard to fill them.

My approach is to fill 1 basket at a time and pass it over to her since she has the tray for the baskets. We don’t talk much because we are busy crouching down and peering into the heart of the bushes in search of big berries.

At one point, however, we somehow ended up in a live action episode of Angry Birds, where a very determined bird flew into Ma’s ribs and attempted to knock her down for the berries. Then he sat on her back, waiting for her to freak and run. When she didn’t, he took off and divebombed my head. He clearly wanted to intimidate us into abandoning our berries. He failed.

We work fast and hard, so that our clothes are drenched in sweat and our glasses are sliding off our noses. My eyebrow sweat literally blinded me until I came up with a workaround.

We are in and out in 1 hour. We don’t dilly dally. We don’t make friends. We are the berry pickers. The funny thing is this is how we like to do it. We enjoy being pickers. Being focuses and intense relaxes us.

What kind of berry picker are you?
