Sick Days and Trade Offs to get to Killer Nashville

IMG_0450

I have to take a few sick days this week. Unfortunately, that means I have to cancel my appearance at the NELA Conference in the Sisters In Crime booth on October 26.

I thought I could do it up until Sunday morning when I woke up with chest tightness, congestion, a pounding headache, sore throat, dry cough, and my personal favorite dizziness.

I somehow thought two cups of green tea would be the cure all. When that didn’t work, I slathered up my neck and chest with Tiger Balm.

Finally I had to admit it. I can’t drive, especially not 7 hours to and from the event when I’m like this. So I emailed the organizer. I hate canceling, but I can’t do it.

I also have to be at Killer Nashville at the end of the week, so I’m battening down the hatches for a few days until I leave for Nashville. Hoping I can get over the worst of this before I go. This is my third time attending Killer Nashville because it is one of my all time favorite writing conferences.

Here’s my schedule at Killer Nashville. Please feel free to chat with me or ask for a signed book at any time. I don’t bite. Well, not since that Monopoly incident when I was 18.

October 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00p.m. at the wine tasting event.

October 30 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. panelist on the “What’s Your Genre?” panel

I will be signing books and chatting with readers after the  panel ends.

October 31 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at my author table signing copies of my book, sharing freebies, & giving away cool prizes.

Stop by to enter to win prizes and get freebies.

I haven’t decided which panels I’m attending yet. I like to save that for the plane ride. Gives me a nice way to pass an hour or two. 🙂

Sorry to hear you’re sick and have to cancel. I’m sure that’s frustrating. But it sounds like your body needs a rest. Get better soon!

    • Thanks Carrie. I’ve lost my voice today. It seems to be an upper respiratory virus. I had something similar last year. Took me down for a few days. Hoping with lots of rest I’ll be back to myself in a couple more days. I hate canceling but I’m in no condition to do 7 hours of driving or trying to talk to anyone right now. 🙁

Sorry to hear a sickness has caught up with you, Kourtney! Sending many good thoughts and tough mojo so that you’ll be ready and raring for Nashville before week’s end!

    • Thanks Mayumi. I am going to stay in bed the next two days and hope that helps. I appreciate the thoughts. I really have to do this trip. I paid for everything already. And I love Killer Nashville.

Sounds like your body is telling you to slow down. It’s good that you’re listening and taking care of yourself, although I know it’s a bummer to miss those appearances. Sending get well wishes and healing.

    • Thanks Lori. I really appreciate it. Yes. I’ve learned my limits and the costs of exceeding them. I went all out for way too long. It’s just not worth the cost. I’m so sad because Nashville was a writing conference/author appearance/seeing old friends that ended with my birthday in NYC. Sadly none of that happened.

  4. So sorry to hear you have not been well Kourtney.. sending healing thoughts your way and hope your regain your strength for the punishing schedules you give yourself..
Take care of your self.. Love and Hugs Sue xxx <3

Oh no, I hope you’ll be feeling good enough to enjoy Killer Nashville! Being sick is never fun and especially not when it interferes with our plans. Take it easy, drink lots of fluids, and rest!

    • I ended up getting sicker each day. 🙁 I’m on antibiotics and slowly seeing some improvement. It totally derailed my Killer Nashville plans and NYC plans. Sigh. It was supposed to be my big writing conference/bday celebration. Sadly that didn’t happen. But I’m drinking lots of fluids and resting.

  7. Something’s going around – between the fall foliage drying, the storms pushing dust and allergies ahead of them, and the basically weird weather and winds, it’s just suffer and hope it doesn’t get worse time.
7 seven hour drive is exhausting even when feeling fine. Whew. (Although We do gut it up and drive more than that to get to Colorado from here…but when you get there, you’re in the mountains! Worth the effort to get across the flat quickly)
Hope a bit of rest and staying snug is just what you need to feel better. Killer Nashville – you’ve got to have energy for that one!
(Oh, posted a spooky tale – one can’t be explained although quite real. So if you’re really bored…)

    • Yeah, my doctor said he’s seen a lot of these respiratory infections lately. It wasn’t realistic to do in a day. And to book so many events so close together was stupidly optimistic. I ended up missing the NELA conference and the Killer Nashville and my birthday plans in NYC. I think I just used up all my reserves and then some. I’ve been so hard for so long. I definitely have to rethink my priorities.

I hope you’re feeling better! Resting and recovering can give us a chance to dream up more stories (especially if you have some good medication). 🙂

    • Thanks. I’ve been watching 3 seasons of the Arrow and catching up on all my shows. Just letting my brain enjoy watching a story unfold. The codeine cough medicine at night knocks me out. I don’t dream I just disappear for 6 hours. It’s been helpful in recovering.

What do you think?
