2014 Goals Q1 Check-In

1) Goal: Move more 

  • Action Plan:  I will move for at least 45-80 minutes each day doing cardio, toning, or weights. I will get up from this laptop every hour for at least 5 minutes and move around. 
  • Status: Everyday, I work out for at least 60 minutes. I get up hourly from the laptop and try to add in different chores/tasks to move more.

GOING STRONG

 

2) Goal: Revise third manuscript and send to agent

  • Action Plan: From February until late April/early May I will review beta readers comments and revise third manuscript. Aiming for delivery to agent in later April/early May. Will formalize deadline once I see how much work is required.

 

  • Status: Beta comments reviewed and implemented. Third manuscript, DM, was revised. Delivered to agent April 19th. Series bible finalized on May 3. Crit partner is in process of reviewing manuscript for me.

 

GOAL COMPLETED

 

3) Goal: Eat a lower carb lifestyle

  • Action Plan: Focus on healthier foods–fruits, vegetables, potatoes, oatmeal. Add them into each meal and cut out processed sugars and white carbs. Aim for 30-40 g of carbs per meal.

 

  • Status: Hit and miss. More hits than misses though. Trying to avoid food like products and focus on real food–fruits, veggies, meats, etc. 

IN PROCESS

4) Goal: Draft first draft of Six Train’s sequel

  • Action Plan: Complete the outline by Feb 5th. Then switch to drafting after I finish third manuscript revisions (as long as Reckonings revisions aren’t required by Harlequin).

 

  • Status: Outline completed on February 7th. Switch to DM revisions until May. If no work required by editor for Reckonings, will begin Six Train sequel drafting in late May/early June.

    I love how you hold yourself accountable to your goals by listing them for yourself–and the world–to see. Sounds like you’re doing well. By the way, what does DM stand for? I assume it’s your book’s title, but I can’t remember what it is. Or maybe you’re not sharing that yet. I never do…

  4. Good job, Kourtney! You are right on track! Getting up from the computer every hour is huge. I’d love to purchase a treadmill desk, or rig one with my current treadmill.

    • Thanks Jill. It really helps the eyes and the spine. And my overall energy. I am way too uncoordinated for a treadmill desk, but I have been known to kneel and stand at my desk and work. Changing position really helps. 🙂 You too!

  6. Impressive, Kourtney! It’s so easy to set goals in January when New Year’s spirits are running high, but following through is where so many fail. I always admire your perseverance.

    • Thanks Gwen. I think it’s one of the perks of being type A. I’ve always had a weird talent for goal setting. Publicly announcing them gives me just enough pressure to stick to them too. 🙂

    The getting up and moving around one is a great goal, and so glad to hear you’ve incorporated it into your daily routine. Not only does it keep circulation up, it should also help with focus: a pumping heart makes for happy synapses. I know I’ve found that exercising especially helps when I’m stuck in a rut, whether it’s with plot, dialogue, or just plain motivation.

    Great news about your manuscripts, too! Congrats on keeping your goals in sight and keeping yourself to task. So many of us start strong but can’t quite follow through, for one reason or another. Brava! 😀

    • LOL. I never realized how many food like products I love. Pringles. Those are a baddie. It takes time to make a habit of things, but move more was way easier to do than I thought. It’s always when I’m folding laundry or on the treadmill that a stroke of brilliance hits.

      Thanks. DM exhausted me. I beat my deadline but I think I pushed a bit too hard. Sometimes it’s good to be a little slower sometimes. Goal setting is tough. I do really well at some and so-so with others. Usually my work life is stellar and my personal life always seems to take the backseat. Not a great work-life balance. But it’s something to work on. 🙂 It I’m trying to take it easier this week.

    I can’t imagine keeping the schedule you do, and with the travel for marketing, eating healthy must be really hard to do. But I’m a huge believer in exercise—even if at times that simply means getting up and walking around the house for a few minutes to get off the rear. Because while “butt in chair” is the only way to finish a novel, it’s also a good path to a heart attack!

    • It definitely takes a toll. The past week has been migraines and fatigue filled. I’m trying to scale back this week and next. Just to give myself a breather. Eating right is hard–it takes constant effort and willpower. Exercise is so good for the body and the mind. I used to edit and draft on the subway standing up. It’s amazing how much work you can get done when you decide that you are going to make those 45 minutes on the train count. During my back injury, I put a stack of books under my laptop and voila–standing desk. 😉

  10. Looks like your goals are coming along nicely.. Its good too that once you set a goal you go back and see how well you are doing.. So many make New Year Resolutions and they last all of two weeks.. if that?.. 🙂
    Well done on the exercises.. I seriously need to tone up my muscles especially in my arms… The only thing that is toned in my fingers from typing LOL 🙂

    • Thanks. It’s not easy but I am a very Type A person so when I set goals I am a go-getter. 🙂 I learned this in consulting–we used to check in on our goals quarterly and have an annual review too. It helped us stay on top of stuff throughout the year. I learned a long time ago policies without procedures don’t work. 🙂

      Thanks. I feel better for it. My doctor once told me I had Olympian typing muscles and that my best muscles were in my forearms and fingers. LOL. Have a great weekend!

    Definitely sounds like a useful and courageous thing to do. As far as I am concerned, I plan to complete a new show within the next few months — which will feature live actors and not animated characters (I’m not doing animation again, at least not for a while!), and will last between 20-30 minutes. I’m really enjoying writing the songs and hope to unveil something about it soon.
