Visiting The Dynasty House

After we left Napa, J announces that we are going to the Dynasty house. You know where they filmed Dynasty in the 80s. I’m stoked. I loved Dynasty almost as much as Dallas! I’m mildly surprised that the mansion wasn’t in Colorado after all but CA.

The stove was from the galley of a cruise ship. The family that owned the house made their fortunes in cruise ships and named the house Filoli. I prefer to call it the Dynasty house.

I think this dining room was in the first season of Dynasty.

It was such a cool kitchen I had to include another shot. Man the meals I could make at that stove!

This hallway looked really familiar to me too…

Loved the main room.

This library was cool, but not enough book shelves and books for me.

These are the famous Dynasty stairs. I can remember Fallon coming down them.

The ballroom was gorgeous and enormous. Stunning wall murals on each wall.

Then we went outside to explore the gardens.

The owners of Filoli loved their garden. It stretches beyond the eye can see.

My only twinge of disappointment was the lack of Dynasty related stuff in the giftshop. I’d pay $5-10 for a cast photo in front of the mansion. Or a Dynasty house mug.

Jenny, this last pic is for you. I think this is the driveway you were mentioning in your comment. ๐Ÿ™‚

Really, really cool pics. I loved Dynasty. My friends and I used to have Dynasty parties. It’s a shame in a way there weren’t more Dynasty related memorabilia, but then again, I can understand the owners not wanting to turn it into a commercial business. The gardens are breath-taking. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks! It was one of the surprises J added into the trip. He’s the best trip planner because he always knows what I want to do. ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s awesome about the Dynasty parties. The giftshop sold lots of garden related things you could buy anywhere. They didn’t really brand themselves well. The gardens were so lovely. It was a cool way to spend a couple hours.

Also, I remember the driveway being really shady and there being more hedges as the car approaches the front of the house. Was that all ‘staged’ from another location, or was the driveway bordered with hedges and trees?

I absolutely love exploring homes, so thank you for taking us into this one. Would you believe, I never really watched Dynasty? But I was a big Knots Landing fan. And there I go dating myself again…

Fun post! I watched Dynasty, but definitely Dallas was my fave of the two.

  7. Pete Denton says:

Great photos again. I must admit to having watched the odd episode of Dynasty. All I can remember is the shoulder pads ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks! I really packed a lot of stuff into my two weeks away. ๐Ÿ™‚ LOL. The house was weirdly familiar though they only used it for season 1 inside and externals shots the rest of the seasons. Loved the show, hated the shoulder pads. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. This knocked me on my feet. The inside was amazing and made me grin. But man, the gardens . . . wow. I miss it out there, you know? I wish I could go out there again.

Looks like you had a great time! Exploring houses is a lot of fun. Sometimes I try to imagine some of my characters in them if I think they’d fit. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Quite the kitchen, all right!

A great tour ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m sure I could quickly become accustomed to living in the Dynasty house if it were ever possible. It’s truly beautiful.

    • I took hundreds of pictures. Just for reference in case I want to replicate some part of it in a novel setting. The only room that didn’t impress me was the library. JP Morgan knew how to do a library right. 2 floors of wall to wall books behind glass cases. Man that is a beautiful thing!

  12. Beautiful post, Kourtney! You’ve got a seriously good eye. The hallway shot makes me want to walk in, a bit nervous as to what I’d find… ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Thanks August! I’ve loved taking pictures since I was a kid. I don’t have the patience to line up the light and everything perfectly, but I snap a mean dozen in less time than most people need for 1 shot. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Me too–if only Blake were waiting for me at the other end. Sigh.

As a European w/o a TV I know nothing about Dynasty (except that I’ve heard the name…) but I do love their gardens….
I greatly enjoyed the comments to the pics such as “Man the meals I could make at that stove!” – I think I would have said the same…. ๐Ÿ™‚
I DO love celestial stairs and I am a sucker for period drama – and just to show that I’m not a TOTAL ignorant, I’d like to point out that Abbey Downton has beautiful stairs too…. :))) Just saying! (I own the DVDs, all of them and can watch them on my computer)
    Lovely post – found on Victoria’s blog….

    • LOL. Glad you enjoyed my comments. I love touring mansions and imagining how those people lived. Downton Abbey is on my to watch list. Just for the architecture and costumes alone! Thanks for stopping by. So nice of Victoria to link to my blog. ๐Ÿ™‚

Too bad most of the interior shots on Dynasty were filmed on a built set but at least they were built in the likeness of Filoli.

What do you think?
